Los Angeles-based neo-psych wizard Morgan Delt has truly brought the psychedelic forces to life with his acid-tripping 60’s druggy jangle rock. Delt takes the listener on a warped, delirious and mind-expanding journey through Syd Barrett’s tangled universe and The 13th Floor Elevators’ hazy underworld, with shades of The Zombies, White Fence, Tame Impala and Ariel Pink’s lo-fi pop craziness. His charms lies in his ability to write the perfect sunshine pop song, which he then immediately starts sabotaging by turning the whole thing inside out. The heavily reverb-smeared vocal is topped with layers of fuzzy guitar drone that can both hypnotize and (at the very least) make you bob your head a little.
This is especially evident on his 2016 release, Phase Zero. Delt summons the classic west coast psychedelia that seems like an everlasting sunrise when refracted through his continuously retrospective looking-glass. Doused in acid and dipped in potash, the music laps like shimmering Pacific waves on a sunny afternoon. (Words: A.H.)
